Hi there!! Welcome to my Siberian Page. My name is Serge and I have gathered a collection of pictures about Irkutsk, Lake Baikal and the surrounding area. These pictures where collected from various sites on the Internet. I built these pages because I was in Siberia in September 1999 and June 2000. I love Siberia and especially the area of Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. I hope you will enjoy these pictures as much as I do. I will add new pages as I have spare time and whenever I will find new pictures. I will eventually add the pictures that I made when I was in Irkutsk, and Lake Baikal. If you have problems or find broken links, please inform me as soon as possible so that I may correct any inconsistencies. Come often to see what changes have occurred since your last visit. 8-) Today's Ruble exchange rate (Rubles = 1 US Dollar) |
About Lake Baikal |
Lake Baikal, near
Irkutsk, is probably one of
the most amazing sights in Siberia. It is 636 km long and covers 31,500 square km (that is as big as Belgium). It contains about one fifth of the worlds fresh water reserves. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world with a maximum depth in the middle of 1,620 m (deeper than three Empire State buildings standing on top of each other, underwater). The lake is normally frozen over from January-May with ice about 70-115 cm thick. It is home to the world's only freshwater seal. Chekhov wrote "You can see through the waters of Lake Baikal as you can see through air" as far down as 40 meters. |
